Deadlines, answered
The questions this page gets asked most.
When is the Self Assessment deadline for the 2025/26 tax year?
Online returns and payment are due by midnight on 31 January 2027, covering the balancing payment plus your first 2026/27 payment on account. Paper returns close earlier, on 31 October 2026.
What are the VAT deadlines in 2026/27?
For the standard staggered quarters: 7 November 2026 (quarter ended 30 September 2026), 7 February 2027 (quarter ended 31 December 2026), 7 May 2027 (quarter ended 31 March 2027) and 7 August 2027 (quarter ended 30 June 2027). If your VAT quarter is staggered differently, your dates shift accordingly.
What happens if I miss an HMRC deadline?
Interest runs from the first day a payment is late, and late returns build penalty points under HMRC's points-based system — reach £200 and fines follow. Clients of the firm have every deadline filed well before the date.
Do company tax deadlines differ from personal ones?
Yes. Corporation tax is due nine months and one day after your company's financial year ends, and Companies House accounts follow their own calendar. Both are tracked for you as a client of the firm.
